Fat Cat Calling for Volunteers

Fat Cat Children’s Festival Calls for Volunteers
For Immediate Release:
May 30, 2017 (Kelowna, BC):  The Interior Savings Fat Cat Children’s Festival is in the final stages of planning for the upcoming 27th annual edition of the Festival coming up on Friday June 9 and Saturday June 10 at Waterfront Park, and organizers are calling for volunteers to step forward to help deliver the creative festival for kids.
“The Festival relies on over 150 volunteers to come help with a variety of jobs, from helping kids at activity stations like the Crafty Cats and Face Painting, to greeting festival goers at the Gates and Information Booths, to the ‘behind the scenes’ jobs such as the Operations and Traffic Control,” says artistic director Dorothee Birker. “We truly appreciate the fantastic support of these generous community members, giving up their time and sharing their skills, but we also know we have a fun and co-operative environment where our Festival Crew really has a great time working together. We have many incredible volunteers that have been volunteering with us for several years, and are so appreciative of their ongoing commitment.”
One of these volunteers is Kristin Lehman, who after completing her studies in an event management programme, came out to the Festival for practical experience three years ago, and has since taken on additional tasks to help with the planning of the Festival as well as the final execution of it. This year Kristin is the Festival’s Volunteer Director, looking after recruiting and scheduling all of the helpers.
Anyone interested in helping at the Festival this year can check out available positions at Volinspire.com or simply connect with Kristin at klehman@live.ca or 250-460-2227.
“It’s great to see the festival come together after a year of planning, and we sincerely appreciate all of the volunteers stepping forward to put those plans into effect,” adds Birker.  “We also want to let the community know that the high-water levels of Okanagan Lake have meant some redesign of the event site, but the Festival is absolutely ready to roll and provide a safe and exciting experience for kids of all ages. Sometimes the best ideas come out of situations just like this and we are really excited about the changes to the site.”
The festival this year celebrates the people and events of the region with its theme ‘Okanagan Stories” and features two full days of entertainment, learning and creativity, plus a fabulous parade.  One of the highlights will be a giant Community Drum Circle where festival goers are invited to Bang Their Drum and be a part of creating a community beat. The Festival runs Friday, June 9 from 8:30 – 2:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 – 4:00 pm, starting with the Parade on Cawston Avenue.

Come Bang Your Drum with Fat Cat

The Interior Savings Fat Cat Children’s Festival is launching a special “Bang Your Drum” project that includes a series of drum workshops every Tuesday evening at the Rotary Centre for the Arts and will culminate in a giant drum circle that will have the community join in a common beat at the annual Festival taking place at Waterfront Park June 9 & 10.

“This has been a long-term vision, to have giant community drum circle at the Festival,” says artistic director Dorothee Birker. “The beat of drums is so elemental and we as humans all respond to them at our very core.  It is quite magical to be an integral part of something that is yet so much bigger than us.  With one giant circle we are all connected, and yet we are and open and welcoming to each other’s differences. Within the circle, you quickly realize you need drums of all types, shapes and sizes to create a full, rich sound and you appreciate the tenor and quality of those sounds co-mingling.”
The Drum Circle will feature over 200 drums and percussion instruments, with facilitators from a variety of cultural backgrounds, including First Nations, Djembe, Middle Eastern, African, Brazillian and Japanese, sharing their rhythms.
In preparation for the Drum Circles at the Festival, the Festival is hosting a series of drum workshops at the Rotary Centre for the Arts each Tuesday in May from 5:30 – 7:30 pm where everyone, young and old, are invited to come and learn about different drumming styles, and how to drum for free.  Participants will also have the opportunity to help build instruments for the sound sculpture that will be featured at the Festival as part of the Bang Your Drum project.
“Please come and join us and Bang Your Drum with Fat Cat,” invites Birker.  “This project is a great way to have the community come together to celebrate the creativity, diversity and richness of our valley by joining drums and people of all cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds into a common beat.”

Fat Cat Shares Okanagan History in 2017

Fat Cat is super excited about the 2017 edition of the Interior Savings Fat Cat Children's Festival.  In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Canada's confederation, Fat Cat will explore some of the stories and history of the Central Okanagan.  Ever wonder who streets are named for and why?  Curious about the movers and shakers who made Kelowna what it is today?  Maybe you will meet them at the Festival or hear a story or song about them ... there will be so much to learn, see and do at the Festival ... mark your calendars for Friday June 9 & Satruday June 10 at Waterfront Park.
